Nicole Asdell, MD

Get to Know Me

Originally from Canada, Dr. Asdell completed her pediatric residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Pennsylvania, where she stayed on for an additional year as Chief Resident. She completed her neonatology fellowship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital focusing her research on neonatal acute kidney injury—specifically, using biomarkers to identify it early and exploring how it may be linked to neurodevelopmental outcomes later in life. Her work earned international recognition and continues to fuel her passion for improving care for the most vulnerable newborns.

During residency, she was honored with the Robert C. Spahr Award for Excellence in Newborn Care, recognizing her commitment and skill in caring for the smallest patients. Dr. Asdell is continually inspired by the strength and resilience of newborns—tiny but mighty humans who amaze her every day.

When she’s not in the NICU, she’s usually chasing after her energetic toddler, doting on her large collection of plant babies, and nurturing a sourdough starter with a personality of its own (some days, it’s the most high-maintenance member of the household). A former mountain bike coach, she still loves to hit the trails when she can, and finds joy in gardening, lifting heavy things for fun, and testing new recipes.

Dr. Asdell brings a thoughtful, compassionate, and evidence-based approach to her work—and a deep appreciation for both the science and soul of neonatal care.
