Heather Weydig, MD

Get to Know Me

A Wisconsin native, Dr. Heather Weydig attended medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin, completed her residency at Children’s Medical Center Dallas and completed her fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. After fellowship, Dr. Weydig stayed as attending at UTSW where she focused on the importance of intraventricular hemorrhage prevention, delivery room resuscitation and noninvasive ventilator strategies. Her passion led her to unique interests in quality improvement and the care of the most vulnerable extremely premature infants. This “golden hour” is extremely important for long term outcomes and has become a unique focus of Dr. Weydig’s career. Dr. Weydig focuses on improving outcomes through patient and family centered evidence-based medicine.

As part of her strive for non-invasive ventilation, she has become extremely comfortable with less invasive surfactant administration including teaching residents, fellows and neonatal nurse practitioners this technique. She has also taught nationally at a workshop for other neonatal providers at Pediatric Academic Societies meeting and has published on this topic.

Her passion lies routed in the delivery room and with the resuscitation of small babies. She has been involved with neonatal resuscitation simulation her entire carrier and has taught many courses to residents, fellows, and colleges. In addition, she has been invited to teach simulation with American Academy of Pediatrics on their “NRP Roadshow” as well. Given this passion, she has been part of Helping babies breathe as an instructor and has had the opportunity to teach this program in Tanzania to help save babies internationally.

Outside of work, Dr. Weydig enjoys being outside, traveling and playing tennis.
